I got back from vacation and made the usual pilgrimage to the mailbox. Lo and behold, a cheque from ICBC was waiting for me.
It was way back in April that ICBC admitted they had been mischarging hundreds of thousands of customers. From the Province:
Thousands of letters will soon be on their way to ICBC customers to let them know if they’ll be seeing a refund, after it was revealed the Crown corporation had overcharged customers some $39 million, and undercharged others about $71 million.
Earlier this year, it was discovered incorrect vehicle descriptors and a 40-year-old computer system were to blame for a multimillion-dollar blunder that saw ICBC overcharge an estimated 240,000 customers, and undercharge about 350,000 others.
Customers who were overcharged will be refunded, while customers who were undercharged will not be asked to reimburse ICBC. The average refund for an individual customer is about $18 per year. All letters are expected to be in the mail by Aug. 20.
ICBC is completing a final review of the 441,000 letters that will be sent to customers who either underpaid or overpaid.
I received a cheque for $217.39, after ICBC calculated I overpaid for optional insurance for my Nissan Versa by $36 in 2009, $70 in 2010, and $96 in 2011. ICBC kicked in $15.39 for interest.
The cheque was dated July 5, and the attached letter July 11. It sure took a long time to get into the mail.
